KVS Librarian Syllabus
The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) Librarian syllabus is divided into two parts: Part I and Part II.
Part I: General Awareness
- General Knowledge: Current affairs, important events, awards and honors, books and authors, sports, science and technology, etc.
- Reasoning Ability: Verbal and non-verbal reasoning, analytical reasoning, puzzles, etc.
- Computer Literacy: Basic computer knowledge, MS Office applications, internet usage, etc.
Part II: Subject-Specific Knowledge
- Library and Information Science:
- Library as a Social Institution: Social and historical foundations of libraries, types of libraries, library movements, etc.
- Normative Principles of Library and Information Science: Ethics of librarianship, intellectual freedom, library standards, etc.
- Laws Relating to Libraries and Information: Copyright law, intellectual property rights, Right to Information Act, etc.
- Library and Information Profession: Roles and responsibilities of librarians, professional organizations, career opportunities, etc.
- Promoters of Library and Information Services: Role of government, NGOs, and individuals in promoting libraries.
- Knowledge Organization and Information Retrieval:
- Classification schemes: Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and Universal Decimal Classification (UDC)
- Cataloguing and indexing: Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR) and subject indexing languages
- Information retrieval systems: Boolean searching, keyword searching, relevance ranking, etc.
- Information Technology
- Library automation: Library Management Systems (LMS), Integrated Library Systems (ILS), etc.
- Information communication technologies (ICT): Web technologies, databases, digital libraries, etc.
- Knowledge management: Knowledge creation, capture, sharing, and application.
- Collection Development and Management:
- Collection development policies and procedures
- Selection and acquisition of library materials
- Weeding and deselection of library materials
- Preservation and conservation of library materials
- Library Services and User Education:
- Reference services: Information literacy, user orientation, reference interview, etc.
- Circulation services: Loan policies, borrowing procedures, etc.
- Library extension activities: Book exhibitions, story telling sessions, etc.
